The documentary chronicles Rahal's rise through Can-Am and Formula Atlantic to his defining 1986 Indianapolis 500 victory and CART championship season — a run that made him one of only a handful of drivers to win the Indy 500 as both a driver and, later, as a team owner. It follows his transition from cockpit to command, building Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing into a championship-winning powerhouse in partnership with David Letterman and Mike Lanigan, and captures the family legacy carried forward through son Graham Rahal's own career on track.
Beyond the trophies, True American Racer is a story about reinvention — a champion who refused to leave the sport when his driving career ended, instead reshaping it from the pit box, the boardroom, and eventually the head of the sanctioning body itself as Indy Racing League CEO.
