Their spellbinding performances tap deep vocal and instrumental skills as they share some musical DNA with Americana bands like the Punch Brothers and Crooked Still as well as adventuresome artists such as tUnE-yArDs, St. Vincent and Alt-J. SHEL goes beyond mere genre blending and focuses on their inner music and the four powerful personalities of the quartet - sisters Eva, Hannah, Sarah and Liza Holbrook.
They return to the Franklin Theatre for a night that is one part album release celebration for “Just Crazy Enough,” produced by the Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart, whose production credits include music from the likes of Stevie Nicks, Joss Stone and Ringo Starr.
Music from this, their second full length album, will be both familiar and far-out to fans of the group, including classically inspired mandolin, violin and piano along with their glowing vocal harmonies. But you’ll also hear ethereal textures that draw on their broad collection of influences from the daring rock bands of the 60s to the contemplative composers of the 18th Century, and even the waves of modern electronica. Because or in spite of this effervescent mashup, “Just Crazy Enough” is a masterful new album for SHEL and it’s easy to get excited about hearing it live. It’s the integral, front-to-back album statement the band has been preparing to make since they began making music.
Part two of the show’s motivation is in recognition of the Franklin Theatre’s 5th Anniversary Celebration.
Thanks to our presenting sponsor - Jackson National Life - and additional sustaining partners, the performance is free to patrons in special appreciation for supporting hundreds of successful concerts hosted since the theater reopened in 2011.
As an additional means of giving back, patrons are encouraged to support “Tails of the Trail,” a non-profit Organized in 2015 that organizes weekly hiking events with shelter dogs on urban trails/greenways around middle Tennessee. By partnering with County Animal Controls and local Rescues they offer much needed socialization and exercise for both the shelter dogs as well as the humans and reduces euthanasia and helps increase adoption rates for the wonderful pups needing forever homes.
