Playing much like a music video with a blaring rock score, director Baz Luhrmann who brought us the fiery 90s style version of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet now takes us to Moulin Rouge, a 19th-century world of sex, drugs and electricity. The story follows a poet (McGregor) who defies his father by moving to France, where he falls into the world of Toulouse-Lautrec (Leguizamo) and his entourage, and is drafted to write a nightclub spectacular. It is in this hot and tempestuous environment that he begins a passionate and ultimately doomed love affair with the club’s highest paid star and courtesan (Kidman).
